Flowing Forms: The Curved Look

In this edition of Ultraleather Living, we explore a trend that’s simple in execution, but striking in effect: curved outdoor design. The subtle shift from straight forms to swooping shapes introduces a fluidity that’s soothing to the eye. In the natural world, straight lines are exceedingly rare—an outdoor space that centers them can feel conspicuous in its contrast. Incorporating even a few round elements compliments the surrounding environment, as if engaging in a continuous dialogue with it. In recent creations from designers at the cutting edge, circularity has been a constant.

Dombolo, a line of outdoor tables by South African designer Haldane Martin, is named for a type of round, fluffy dumpling beloved by Xhosa culture. The pieces feature cylindrical legs which support ovular and circular tops. For the legs, Martin opted for dairy tubing—a type of stainless steel used in the industrial dairy industry. The shape of the tables gives them a relaxed feel, perfect for outdoor living.

Danish designer Søren Rose’s outdoor furniture collection slopes and bends, taking inspiration from the silhouettes of sand dunes. Slats of powder-coated aluminum curve inward to form the bases of chairs, sofas, and tables. The rounded lines are warm and accessible, setting a welcoming tone in communal areas.

Italian lighting brand Lodes has created a playful fixture for its outdoor collection. Named Kinno, the lamp resembles a long-stemmed mushroom and is designed to be staked directly into soil. It comes in a number of earthy hues, including brown, black, and green, adding to its natural appearance.
